This design is a mix of several styles of compost bins we've seen or read about. We are in a residential neighborhood so the bins have to be covered to discourage dogs and other critters from investigating our kitchen scraps. Having three compartments allows us turn the compost regularly from one compartment into the next, keeping two piles cooking at all times. Usually by the time we're ready to start a third one, it's time to empty the first bin and work it into a garden bed. Because they are tall bins, the front panel slides out making it quite easy to get in with a pitch fork to turn the pile, and also unload it.

A good layer will have a large, smooth, moist, almost white vent. The two small bones at the sides of the vent are called the pubic bones. They should be flexible and wide apart, with at least two finger widths between them. The abdomen should be deep, soft, and pliable without an accumulation of body fat. The depth of the abdomen is measured between the tip of the keel or breast bone and the pubic bones. Laying hens should have a depth of three or four finger widths.

In the quest for flock improvement and self-reliance, Karma Glos from Kingbird Farm has started breeding her own laying hen replacements. Here she describes how she manages them from hen to egg, and incubator to chick. This is one clip in a series of videos demonstrating how Kingbird Farm, a certified organic diversified small farm in Berkshire, NY, produces eggs from pastured laying hens. This clip is from the Video Mentor series, produced by the Cornell Small Farms Program (http://nebeginningfarmers.org), filmed and edited by Peter Carroll of Ithaca, NY. This project was supported by the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (BFRDP) of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA, Grant # 2009-49400-05878.

Water Storage Bag 300 Gallon AQUATANK II.,TRANSPORTABLE, SUPER HEAVY DUTY
The new Aquatank II is ideal for emergency water storage, but can be used for many other applications. Unlike our previous models that were designed to be static after filling. The new Aquatank II can be transported in an SUV, truck, camper or trailer without the risk of damaging the unit. Of course with certain precautions.
The material used for the Aquatank II, is a heavy duty polyurethane coated nylon that is suitable for potable water. This material is highly puncture resistant, durable and flexible. It will not wrinkle, crease or crack. When not in use this unit can be folded or rolled up to take up almost no storage space (about 4.5' X 12').
The drain sleeve on the Aquatank II has a male garden hose attachment and the fill sleeve has a female attachment.

a cantilevered deck. Toenail the joists to the ledger first (flush w/ top), then install the hangers. As the joists are run over the dropped beam (and longer than req'd), chalk a line pulled from the house/ledger, then cut the joists to length. The rim? will be straight regardless of how straight the house/ledger is.

he goal of predator proofing is to balance safety with freedom for the chickens and other domestic fowl we care for. We want to provide them with every opportunity to exercise their free will and natural instincts, but because they are here at our whim we are responsible for keeping them out of harm's way.

I decided to put up this page as so many people ask the same questions as I once did. It has to do with feed, genetics and putting related poultry back together. A lot of people will say not to do it, I have never heard an experienced breeder say this however. This is from my writings from an email I replied to. It's very informal... and understand that it's only part of it....

Scientific breeding is deserving of study by every one interested in the utility side as well as by those attracted to the fancy side of poultry raising. No farmer can afford to ignore the profit to be derived from the proper handling of even a small flock. Common hens are well enough in their way and by scientific breeding might in time be developed into heavy laying strains, but practical people are more interested in what has already been accomplished along such lines. They want stock that will produce the most eggs and meat at the minimum cost of feed. Certain Leghorn strains will produce more eggs than any other known breed, because for many years they have been systematically bred for great egg yield. Under certain conditions like will produce like. A pullet from a strain of great layers should be a great layer; if bred to a male descended from a strain of great layers, the females of this progeny should be greater layers.

LEXEL IS A CO-POLYMER RUBBER-BASED SEALANT THAT IS USED AS AN ADHESIVE BY MANY MOSAICS ARTISTS. IT HAS EXCELLENT ADHESION TO A WIDE VARIETY OF MATERIALS, EVEN AFTER SEVEN DAYS OF WATER IMMERSION SO IT'S GREAT FOR OUTDOOR PROJECTS. LEXEL DRIES 19 TIMES CLEARER THAN SILICONE AND WILL NOT YELLOW MAKING IT A PERFECT SOLUTION FOR GLASS ON GLASS APPLICATIONS. UNLIKE SILICONE, LEXEL STICKS TO ITSELF SO YOU CAN REPAIR IT BY APPLYING NEW LEXEL ON TOP OF THE OLD LEXEL. LEXEL STICKS TO ALMOST ANYTHING - WET OR DRY. SOME CUSTOMERS REPORT THAN IT HAS LESS FUMES THAN SILICONE GLUE.
ADHERES TO:
acrylic • copper • most plastics • polycarbonate • polystyrene (except foam) • aluminum • chrome • nylon • fiberglass • steel • PVC • ABS • asphalt • wood • Formica • Lexan • tile • Plexiglas • masonry • metal • glass • vinyl • canvas • paint • concrete • brick • fiber-cement • porcelain • parquet • terra-cotta • and more!
LEXEL HOLDS ITS SEAL THROUGH RAIN, SNOW, SUN AND WIND, HOWEVER IT SHOULD NOT BE USED IN AREAS OF CONTINUOUS SUBMERSION (i.e., aquariums or swimming pools). DO NOT USE LEXEL IN AREAS WHERE TEMPERATURES EXCEED 200ºF. LEXEL MAY DAMAGE SOME PLASTICS, SUCH AS POLYSTYRENE FOAM INSULATION, THEREFORE IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT PLASTICS NOT LISTED SHOULD BE TESTED FOR COMPATIBILITY BEFORE USE.

Selected Perennials for Oklahoma Gardens

Helianthus annuus
sunflower
Annual Well, I’m not going to write an article on annuals… so I thought I’d throw this fun flower into the perennial article. That’s semi-legit because they do come up in a lot of gardens every year. Now that I’m completely justified….let me say, Sunflowers are LOTS OF FUN! They are the ideal plant to begin teaching children with… they grow fast enough to fascinate both student and teacher. And the flowers are big enough to fascinate you all over again. These days they come in an enormous range of colors and sizes… so please yourself, but make sure you have at least 1-3 giant sunflowers so the kid’s can learn about feeding birds and about salted sunflower seeds. There is always just enough sun in any garden for a small patch of these prairie loving flower giants.

Metal craft. I am thinking a nice sheet of copper would make a really nice backsplash above the kitchen counters. It's 19$ a yard for the thinnest 12" wide sheets. HMMMMM....
